what is the easiest way to shell and preserve chestnuts

have 2#s of chestnuts and don't know how to peel or preserve

Cut off top and peel skin; if not using right away, store in refrigerator, covered with water, which should be changed daily.  Will last about 2 weeks before going bad.  Check for soft spots before storing, may turn others bad.

My friends did them differently than my husband...........he boils them and then  cracks them open and eats them.............my friend boiled them and cut the shell and used her caste iron pan and roasted them.  When we were kids visiting downtown Philadelphia Pa, the street corner vendors would roast them on an open fire.  They will pop a little, I liked the last 2 ways.
