How to make caramel from sweetened condensed milk

I know you simmer the unopened can for several hours.  My question is--How many hours, 6 or 8?

I think that it would be dangerous to heat an unopened can in water, it could explode and make a horrible sticky mess and could burn you.  In your internet brower, put the question in how to make caramel with sweetened condensed milk, I am sure there are plenty different ways that a lot safer.
