what is lemon zest?

trying to determine if I need to go to the store to get a lemon or if I can use something else in exchange.

Lemon Zest is the peel. You can purchase a lemon 'Zester', it makes fine shreds of the peel. If not, you can use a potato peeler and peel off some pieces and slice supper fine with a knife.  It adds a true lemon flavor. No substitute for the real thing!

You also can use a metal shredder to shed it..................very expensive to buy...............just dry it out...............
