How to use Baking soda as a meat tenderizer

I was told that adding baking soda (how much)  to meat

while it was cooking would tenderizer the meat.

You use that on thin pieces of tough meat and put it in the fridge overnight and the you have to make sur that you wash it off or it will be too salty, it also changes the texture of the meat.  I can't do this because I have blood pressure problems.
