The beans may have been dipped into a tempura batter then deep fried.  Spices could have been put into the batter.  The best type seems to be those that have frothy beaten eggs usually whites only, mixed with rice or cornflour with either beer or soda water, but plain water works too.  Some snobs will say the the water should be iced before use, but I don't bother and it turns out ok.  It is very important to have enough hot oil to allow deep frying that is no overcrowding whilst cooking - a very short time.
