Why is my custard in my pie full of holes and not smooth

I have been I making this same pie for 40 years and this one doesn't look like any I have ever made before, the custard Is almost like small curd cottage cheese

I think that is caused from beating it too much, too much air gets into it.  

Having air pockets and looking like cottage cheese is two different things though.  Which one is it?  

Looking like cottage cheese sounds like it is overbaked...
