How do you know if an egg is good?

How can I tell if my eggs are still ok to use even the best by date has passed?  I'm baking something but I don't want to run to the store to buy a carton of eggs. I want to still use the eggs in my fridge but the best by date was 3 days ago.  Thanks!

Fill a cup with cool water.  Put your egg in the water. If it floats it is bad. If it sinks it is still good.

The answer is 100% correct.....and if you do have some bad eggs and a deer problem......mix up those old eggs.....add about 2 qts water and some liquid hot sauce.....not the one with pieces in it....the regular liquid kind....even from the $ store.....mix and spray to keep the deer away.......it will have a smell...so don't do it near your front door.
Not 100% correct. While the size of the air pocket within an egg can certainly indicate, (to a degree) the freshness of an egg, whether the egg floats or not is not an indication of whether it is bad or not.
According to the USDA;
"An egg can float in water when its air cell has enlarged sufficiently to keep it buoyant. This means the egg is old, but it may be perfectly safe to use. Crack the egg into a bowl and examine it for an off-odor or unusual appearance before deciding to use or discard it. A spoiled egg will have an unpleasant odor when you break open the shell, either when raw or cooked."
and also if it plops out and the yoke is intact but the yoke it laying flat like a pancake it is bad......all bad eggs do not have a smell right away...don't take a chance with a floating egg.  it can effect the quality of food that you are making and someone is going to eat it.....if it doubt throw it out.
